The attempt failed because of heavy rain which caused the canal where River Trent Joins Trent and Mersey at Alrewas to be impassable. Howard and Jean then tried to go the other way round via Birmingham and Kingswood junction and got as far as Bascote Staircase Locks No 14 and 15 near Leamington Spa which had been damaged and were impassable. Having to turn round, they returned via Birmingham, where Laurie and Mary joined for the last part of the trip back to Fazeley Mill Marina .
